David Kromminga has been a pastor for 22 years, first at All Nations Christian Reformed Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and now for the past 8 years at Sherman Street. The church is less than a mile away from where he spent the first 20 years of his life. He graduated from Calvin College and Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids.
Having only lived in and served churches in urban areas, David loves cities with their quirky people and places; but he also loves the beauty of the natural world, particularly as found in Nova Scotia and northern Michigan. He has a passion for preaching with a pastoral heart for a wide variety of people and for developing authentic Christian community in the church. Experiences of the diversity of God’s worldwide church have always inspired him. David believes in the power of God’s Word and Spirit to make Jesus’ presence known.
He has written several articles for the church magazine The Banner, most recently on the topic of violence. From 2003 through 2005, David and four other pastors formed the Revelation 5 Learning Group to examine how churches can transition into multiracial communities of Christians. He has also served on the boards of the Grand Rapids Center for Ecumenism (GRACE), MSU Extension and Evergreen Christian School.
David and his wife, Mary Buteyn, have two daughters, Margaret, 15, and Abigail, 12, and love their life together as a family. They laugh a lot together. They try their best to keep their family open and welcoming to others and aware of the wider world. In Fall of 2008 the family enjoyed a 3 ½ month sabbatical in Berlin, Germany. There, he took up running with his daughter, a practice that he’s trying to continue. David likes to fish, but as someone has told him, “I sure hope you’re a better fisher of men than you are a fisher of fish!” He hopes so too (but sometimes also wonders!).
